The Waterproof iBook?

By David Norton

We all want Extreme iBooks -- iBooks that would be able to operate in all kinds of conditions, and in all kinds of places.

Often, I want to take the iBook outside, to be able to carry it by the handle in the rain, showing it off. Obviously, I haven't -- it's a $1600 piece of equipment, and not even close to being called even water resistant (at least, I don't think so!). What would be very cool for Apple to make is a waterproof iBook. You can call me insane, but it's a cool idea. Who wouldn't want to be able to sit on a pool chair without fear of the iBook getting messed up if it's splashed? It would be so cool for divers to be able to take an iBook with them on dives. I bet the fish would be attracted to it.

While they're at it, maybe Apple should make an iBook that can work in -50 degree weather, or one that can work in outer space, or in high-pressure areas. I want to be able to drop the iBook without fear, just like the eMate! An uninflammable (I checked the dictionary, it is a word!) iBook would be a great tool for firefighters, no? What's more, it could survive a fire, making it a great tool for businesses, or families that don't want their stuff ruined.

True wireless Internet -- where you could connect from virtually anywhere in the world -- would be sweet. It wouldn't have to be fast, just versatile. What many people don't understand is that the current wireless Internet capability requires a basestation of some sort plugged into a power socket and telephone jack. When I am riding in the car, I could check my email, surf the web, and check my stocks!

We need FireWire ports, at least the on the iBook DV. (Oops! I wasn't supposed to say anything about that...)

iBooks can be upgraded a bunch, even with ideas other than what I just mentioned here (wireless power? I guess I won't get into that...)
