Color me Ruby! (Or Sage, or Indigo, or Snow, or Graphite) By Joey Cooper
The new color stars of the iMac line are Indigo, Ruby, Sage and Snow, and they join the always elegant Graphite. Pretty simple, right? Wrong. Apple now has four different models of the iMac. This isn't bad in and of itself, but it does require a little more thinking on a Mac user's part. The low-end iMac is now priced at $799. It is available in Indigo, features a 350 MHz PowerPC G3 processor, contains 64MB of RAM, 512K backside cache, a 7GB Ultra ATA hard disk, a slot loading CD-ROM drive, a built-in 56K modem and of course two USB ports. Next in line is the always popular iMac DV. This home video-ready machine is available in Indigo and Ruby, features a 400 MHz PowerPC G3 processor, contains 64MB of RAM, 512K backside cache, a 10GB Ultra ATA hard disk, a slot-loading CD-ROM drive, a built-in 56K modem, two FireWire ports, VGA video mirroring and AirPort support for just $999. This has to be the best price-value computer on the market today. So far, so good. We're not too confused, are we? Just and wait and you will be. You see, there's also this new iMac DV Plus (or "+," we're currently not sure what the proper usage is) , available in Indigo, Ruby and Sage, features a 450 MHz PowerPC G3 processor, contains 64MB of RAM, 512K backside cache, a 20GB Ultra ATA hard disk, a slot-loading DVD-ROM drive with DVD-Video playback, a built-in 56K modem, two FireWire ports, VGA video mirroring and AirPort support. All for $1,299. ![]() The iMac line from Apple, in five non-fruity flavors/photos courtesy Apple Now, you should be thoroughly confused by now. So many DV models. But, yes you guessed it, there is another line. Meet iMac DV Special Edition, available in Graphite and Snow. This high-end model features a 500 MHz PowerPC G3 processor, contains 128MB of RAM, a 30GB Ultra ATA hard disk, a slot-loading DVD-ROM drive with DVD-Video playback, a built-in 56K modem, two FireWire ports, VGA video mirroring and AirPort support. And you guessed it, all this for $1,499. -Joey Cooper still loves his original Bondi Blue iMac. Related Discussions At MacParty.com:
