Supercomputer With an Attitude

By Joey Cooper

Apple updated their Power Mac G4 line at the Expo today, unveiling two models which come standard with dual processors.

The 450 MHz and 500 MHz Power Mac G4s each contain dual PowerPC G4 processors. According to Apple, when running applications like Adobe Photoshop, the dual processor 500 MHz Power Mac G4 is as fast as a 2GHz Pentium III is expected to be upon its release a year or more from now.

Apple also announced that the new Power Mac line comes standard with Gigabit Ethernet, an industry first. All three G4 models feature 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet built-in on the motherboard, making the G4 the ultimate networked client for transferring large files, such as image and digital video files, around a network.

The new Power Mac G4s come standard with the new, innovative optical Apple Pro Mouse and the new Apple Pro Keyboard, as do all current Apple desktop models.

The new Power Mac G4 also comes pre-installed with Apple's iMovie 2, the easy-to-use consumer digital video editing software. iMovie 2 features a more refined user interface that's even easier to use than the earlier version, according to Apple. Improved audio editing capabilities, enhanced controls for titles and transitions, and new effects such as speeding up or slowing down video clips, adding sepia tone and creating soft focus are also focuses of this upgrade.

The three Power Mac G4 models are:

  • 400 MHz processor, 64MB of RAM memory, ATI RAGE 128 Pro with 16MB video RAM, a 20GB Ultra ATA/66 hard drive, DVD-ROM drive with DVD Video playback, FireWire and USB ports, three 33 MHz PCI slots, and 1000BASE-T Ethernet. It is priced at $1,599
  • Dual PowerPC G4 450 MHz processors with 1MB level 2 backside cache per PowerPC G4 processor, 128MB of RAM, ATI RAGE 128 Pro with 16MB video RAM, a 30GB Ultra ATA/66 disk drive, and all the same standard features of the first model. It is priced at $2,499
  • Dual PowerPC G4 500 MHz processors with 1MB level 2 backside cache per PowerPC G4 processor, 256MB of RAM memory, ATI RAGE 128 Pro with 16MB video RAM, a 40GB Ultra ATA/66 disk drive, DVD-RAM drive, and all the regular features. This one is priced at $3,499
