The Little Cube That Could At the recent MacWorld Expo in New York, Apple revised 60% of its product line, introducing new iMac colors, a new keyboard, a new mouse, a revamped Power Mac G4 line and lastly, the Power Mac G4 Cube. The what? The Power Mac G4 Cube. It is elegance compressed into the size of a tissue box, a sort of Mini Me of the Mac line. It's compact, it's stylish, it's cool--but who is the Cube for, anyway? Who would want one of these things? The answer to this question is found in the current product line. At one end is the iMac, a consumer oriented, stylish and fun desktop machine. It doesn't pack serious power but the power it packs is ample plenty for the average Joe (as well as many MacMilitia.com staff members). The iMac's simplicity and small footprint makes it attractive to just about anyone. At the opposite end of the product line is the Power Mac G4 -- a butt-kicking, take-no-prisoners Mac, with power enough to make 3D movies and special effects good enough to fool millions into thinking that Leonardo DiCaprio did stand on the bow of the "Titanic" holding Kate Winslet. So if you are looking to buy a Mac, what do you choose: The cute but limited iMac or the very powerful, expandable and expensive Power Mac G4? There is no middle ground. Enter the Cube. The Cube is designed to fit in that niche, to appeal to someone who wants the power (but not expandability) of a G4 and the looks of the iMac. It is meant to sit quietly on an executive's desk, looking good, doing what has to be done, without a lot of cables. Executive-types like this sort of style and functionality. The Cube is also designed to go into small spaces, perfect for that home office. The G4 Cube looks good and is powerful. Doesn't that fit the image that every executive has of himself? Apple thinks so and that is why the G4 Cube is indeed the little Cube that could.
